"The books get written because I work at it. Seven hours a day, seven days a week. In the evening, after dinner and watching the 9 o'clock television news with my wife, I read for whatever I'm working on until I go to bed. Every ten weeks or so, Evelyn and I take a trip somewhere for a week or two. Morocco in the winter, say, or France or Italy. I've developed such an intense motor habit that often when I'm walking down the street I find my fingers moving as though I were typing. It's a result of self-conditioning. I've applied myself so assiduously to my work that it has become a necessity to me. It has had two other results. I don't have to think about technique, only content. Writing is more than a necessity. It is a positive pleasure, the fulfilment of a contract I made with myself 20 years ago.
