The Abandoned Woman Book Jacket

A ribald historical novel about the only Queen of England ever tried for adultery. Caroline of Brunswick, whose hobby was sex, became Queen the hard way, by marrying – in 1794 – the epoch’s most impossible husband, George, Prince of Wales, future King of England.

Caroline’s story is a Pandora’s box into which is packed history’s worst marriage and its tumultuous results: political and national disaster.

The havoc caused to English history by husband and wife was to bombard all of Europe with its wild bitterness. So extensive was the manipulation by the Whigs and the Tories, that the scandals, stretching over twenty-six years, and their exploitation by politicians, make Watergate look like a Nixon love rally.

Through the amused eyes of history, however, this story of the marriage of royal personages can be seen as a most hilarious comedy – perhaps because other people’s awful marriages have seemed funny since the dawn of time, and perhaps because with laughter and delight Richard Condon has given us a heroine whom we truly love despite her every outrageous mistake.
